i love thanksgiving
I Love Thanksgiving....BRING IT ON!
Not for the turkey or the stuffing but for the reminder that it is so much more than the turkey, stuffing and pies. For me, it reminds me to have a deep sense of gratitude.
Thanksgiving is not just a holiday celebration once a year. It is an attitude that produces JOY! This is something to be practiced often, not just at Thanksgiving time. That is if you are in the market of experiencing more JOY in your life!
I practice gratitude each morning and before I go to bed. This time of year helps me go deeper and be more mindful of what I am thankful for while I sweat over the stove making all the must have traditions I do not like cooking, not one bit but I do love how I can take the time (while I wait for the water to boil for my potatoes) and make a conscious effort with my thoughts. It is a perfect time for me to fill up my bucket of Thankfulness and let it overflow! As I do this, the joy in me rises!
You can use this same exercise to experience more joy with your TEEN!
If you are struggling with connecting with your teen and your mind tends to see what is not working or what they are not doing right…….then check your Thankfulness Meter.
Pause for a moment, and gauge your thankfulness. If it is low, then CRANK IT UP!
Search for reasons to be thankful for your teen.
Even better if you write them down.
Your perspective will gradually shift from focusing on all that is wrong to rejoicing to what all is going well!
NO matter what is happening, you can dig deep and practice stillness to find something to be thankful for. I rely heavily on my faith when I seem to be focusing on the negative. I ask for strength to see the good around me. As I sit in stillness, the goodness bubbles up and I capture it in my journal. I feel into the goodness, experiencing the bits of joy that come along with it and this is how I let my heart start to overflow with thankfulness and I experience such JOY.
I challenge you over this week to open your heart and actively search for all the things you are thankful for. Also start another list specifically why you are thankful for your teen in your life!
My thankfulness list consists of:
Having a car ride with just me and my teen.
Getting a quick hug before my teen went to bed
Seeing a smile on their face.
My teen trying to convince me why he needs more hockey sticks.
My teen being my partner while we go food shopping.
My teen going on a walk with me.
I wrote this list so that you can see the simplicity of it. These are things we overlook easily when we are not actively looking for them. We miss these moments most of the time but it is in these moments we experience JOY.
In simplicity is where we FIND JOY!
Train your brain to see all the goodness going on around you.
