comfort zone
Are you living in the Comfort Zone?
Living in the comfort zone is not what we were born to do.
Many of us are not even entering the comfort zone we are living in the fear zone.
Our teens are watching what zone we are living in. I like to think of life in terms of several zones to live in. Fear Zone, Comfort Zone, Learning Zone, and Growth Zone.
Fear Zone is where we find excuses not to do something, lack self confidence, and worry what others think of us.
Comfort Zone is where we deal with the familiar and what feels safe, the regular habits and routines.
Learning Zone is where we start building skills, deal with challenges, and our self-confidence starts to grow.
Growth Zone is where we start living our dreams, set new goals, and master skills.
Whatever zone we choose to live in, we are subconsciously teaching our teens to do the same. If we tend to live in the fear zone we find excuses not to try something new, our teens see that our confidence is low, and our fear of failure is too great to take a step forward.
When we get into a comfort zone we have a hard time getting motivated to do things. We get complacent and it becomes difficult for us to self-motivate.
Our teens are watching how we take on the world.
So let's start by taking action! Learn something new, practice a skill to master it, or start dreaming to see what you want to do next in your life and start doing it!
For years, I have wanted to be a decent skier. I dreamt of taking my family on winter getaways so we could ski together on a beautiful snowy mountain while taking breaks in the lodge drinking hot chocolate and then sitting by a fire in the evenings.
The problem was I made excuses for years. I was too busy to learn, it was too expensive, we don’t have any ski gear, it's a lot of work for one week of skiing…blah blah blah.
You name it, I had an excuse, I was totally living in fear zone.
But this year I am now in learning mode when it comes to getting closer to my dream of a family ski vacation.
This year I decided to take a step forward. I rented skis for the season for me and the kids. This was my first step in becoming a decent skier. I figured, if I rented skis this would be the year that I practice!
Next step forward: I purchased lift tickets for this past weekend.
Next step forward: I got up early, packed the car, and the kids, and myself took off to the nearest mountain.
Next step: I got my skis on and bundled up in my warm weather gear.
Next: I headed straight for the magic carpet and up I went!
Next: I made it to the bunny hill.
Next: I did it again and again and again.
Next: I mustered up some bravery and headed to the lift ready to take on my next challenge. And so on.
I practiced and practiced and practiced. My kids saw me laugh, try, fall, get back up, try again, laugh some more, and keep going. We had so much fun together. It was great to experience life together with them. I wasn’t on the sidelines this time. I was active and living life to its fullest.
I lived out part of my dream because a big part of my dream was being on a mountain and skiing with my family. And that is exactly what I did! It may not be my full dream realized yet, but my heart is full and I want to keep going! My teens and I had a fantastic time in the learning zone, one step out of the comfort zone.
So what are you going to do this week to head out of your comfort zone and into the learning zone? It is time to start living again!! Our teens want to be a part of it!
They are watching, and what is more fun being an example of what is possible.
